Maybe the South should have been allowed to secede. In general, US society needs to be less coercive, to this day. Maybe this will help with that. This improves State sovereignty quite a bit. If the USA is so great, it should be voluntary.
I am perfectly capable of doing a long exposition on this ala John Marshall, defining differences between nullification and secession, a constitution and a compact, yadda yadda, but this is so that when someone like Rick Perry says that secession is a legitimate topic of discussion you can just say "Happy trails, amigo!"
But, let me add, the rights of the minority in a free society are; basic rights of all the members of the society, the right to be heard, and the right to leave. So it's about a truly free society. Voluntary membership.
